Yesterday I used a brand new toy while carrying my kayak out of the Linville Gorge. If you’ve ever experienced this river you know that there can be a long hike in and out of the gorge.

I’ve learned that music is a welcome friend to help the time pass and keep me motivated on the hike, and of course the advent of the iPod has made music and sports tremendously attainable. Recently I acquired a set of Full Metal Jacket headphones, made by Skullcandy. I’ve never experienced such a full sound out of an earbud. I felt as if I was in the theater of the great outdoors with surround sound and a subwoofer. On my playlist was Sparta, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Chris Wollard and Austin Lucas – and the five of us bonded like never before.
