A long time ago I had a friend tell me “You’ve never really surfed a Riot boat until you’ve had it on a big green wave.” So when I got my brand spanking new Astro I hoped in the car and rallied up the the legendary wave to give the boat a proper test. One the way I met up with my old friend and former World Class student Fred Norquist and we spent a few glorious days as the only ones in the eddy.

Stay tuned to Rapid Transit for Fred’s documentary on the deforestation projects that are threatening Skook and the local way of life that we all cherish.

(ps - I really have no clue what I’m doing here so if the video doesn’t work, don’t blame me. I didn’t invent the internet. Blame Al Gore.)

Spring 2008: March-June I shot a good handful of footage that never made it into any of our videos. Also, Daniel Windham and Chris Gragtmans contributed some nice footage from the Elk Gorge and the Fayetteville WV area. All in all this made for a fun Video-Podcast. The normal “edit-to-music” format wasn’t doing it for me so I decided to do more of a commentary style mixed with music. You’ll see once you get into the video.

Enjoy footage from the Raven Claw, the Elk Horn, New Edition, Ride Nanty Ride, Tuck Medicated, Free Billy & Underrated Stormtroopers Not Wielding Camel-toes. Featuring the kayak daredevil talents of: Chris Gragtmans, Pat Keller, Kirk Eddlemon, Daniel Windham, Chris Gallaway, Ben Blake, Jesse Wilensky, Kelsey Thompson, Bryan Kirk, Brian Jennings, David Finney, Daniel Dutton, TR Yon, Andy Gates, HRM, Craig Parks, Jason McClure, Nathan Silsbee, Stephen Page, Chris Stafford, Chris Wing-ding-dang-diddly-doo, Garrett Bryant, Fergus Coffey and myself. Whew, that is an long list of cast members, and a long video… 14 + minutes.

I’d also like to make a special announcement regarding a future Rapid Transit production. We will be premiering our first feature length DVD at Asheville Pizza Company on Thursday, October 30th, 2008. We’ll have much more information including a movie trailer here soon.

Further, I’d like to send you over to the IR Mustache King to see who’s vying for the huge prize purse in this year’s Curt Davis Invitational Mustache Growing Contest of Paddlesports. http://mustacheking.blogspot.com/

Greetings Podcasters and horse lovers alike. Chris Gallaway’s Googles aren’t working so I got on the Internets (also broken) for him to post this mess. Our very good man shot some headcam during the Jerry’s Baddle race on the Green River this spring and just now decided to whip it out. It’s a very thrilling, relaxing, informative, lackluster, sad, happy, thoughtful, selfish, black, white, off, on, apples, oranges video.

(headcam pointing straight through the go-left slot - photo by Isaac Ludwig)
You can see all the lines, especially race lines, as Chris races his borrowed Wave Sport “Momentum” through the Narrows and all the class III-IV boogie above and below. Watch out for a bit of a hiccup at Sunshine. The video comes equipped with the fine editing, voice-over and music choices that you would expect from a National Paddling Film Festival winner. Please do enjoy via iTunes on our Podcast or you may visit Gallaway’s video Library HERE. Orrrrrrr, you may click one of the Quicktime viewing options below.
Music in the video by Bonobo, song: Muzak and Ben Gallaway, song: Longaway.

This is a photo of Chris Gallaway with a freshly combed beard.

Watch Buck Fever in full. HERE is the direct link. Or you may find it in the RT video library.

Buck Fever (circa 1998-2000, VHS)
Regardless of the message you get from watching or perhaps the intended message, this video is what kayaking and living was to me in the late 90s - Lots of time on the road, lots of kayaking, making friends and building my business-to-be. After meeting through mutual friends in August of 1999, Jed Selby and I decided that we should combine our recently accumulated footage to make one colossal heap of semi-organized, unplotted, multidirectional kayaking video. What we came up with in a matter of ten days, and our first ever editing experience, was Buck Fever.
It seems like yesterday when I was rolling down from Boone to do my very first kayak video premiere at Asheville Pizza Company. Jed Selby and I spent ten days with my cousin Jake editing this masterpiece. Jed nor I had a computer and this was the first time we had heard of Final Cut Pro. Jake was getting into the multimedia field and had an early G4 Mac and the first version of FCP. This was our editing crash course and we did crash a few times.
Jake now…

I can’t thank Jake enough for kick-starting me into video production. To this day he still helps me out when I have tech questions. Jake has gone on to create himself a successful, full-time, multimedia career and moonlights at Snowghost Music out of Whitefish, MT.
JED now…

Many boaters know what Jed has gone on to do aside from all his paddling accomplishments. Over the past few years he has built a quite impressive business portfolio and still absolutely rips in a kayak. Check him out at South Main, Buena Vista, CO.
Me now…

Well, you’re here, so you see what I’m doing.
Take a look HERE. You may still buy it on VHS, if you know what that is. VHS? Hmmmm… What did I do with that old VCR we had? Ponder… It costs a whopping $3 and you’ll even get a free Rapid Transit sticker with it… okay two stickers. Here’s where you can buy it. CLICK.

This is Andy Gates presenting the first of many instructional kayaking clips. This video clip is on how to loop, I go through the steps on how to complete the trick. If you would like me to do a certain trick comment and let me know. Other then that I’m out of here.
Until next time,

The other week my boss called me to work… well lets just say I didn’t work that shift or the one I was originally signed up to work. Instead I went kayaking and it was totally worth it! This footage is of four really killer places to paddle.

First up is Eternity hole on the Tuck., then there is Quarter Mile hole on the Noli., a little bit of play on the famous Green River Narrows, and last but not least Wilson’s creek. The music is brought to us by Jade Tree. The first song is Young, Loud, and Scotty, by Lifetime on the Jeremy’s Best Dancers album. The second song in the video is Reminisce by the Statistics on the Leave your name album. You can find both of these artists among many other really talented ones at JadeTree.com.

Thanks for listening,
Andy Gates

If Obama loses the election I’m packing up and heading to the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. This city is rad. Its got amazing sushi, cool parks, coffee shops (think Amsterdam), music, architecture, amazing public transportation and some of the warmest folks I’ve ever met. Southern US hospitality doesn’t have $h@t on that city. But bring a fat wallet cause its pricey. Its similar to Asheville that its a progressive place but what surrounds it is even better.
World class kayaking is all less than a two hour drive to Whistler, Squamish, and Vancouver Island. This video covers a small percentage of the runs in the Vancouver vicinity. Runs in order of appearance 21 Mile Creek, Birkenhead (high water), Callaghans Creek, and Rogers Creek. The Cast: Sean Thompson, Jerry Jibscomb, Alex Harvey, Liggin, Dangerous Dave, Professor Paddle James and the Montana Boys. Music: Eliot Lipp-Linc and Gift of Gab-Ride of Your Life.
BC is a wilderness full of vast resources. Not only for recreational purposes but more so for economical gain: high voltage power lines parallel every dirt or major road we traveled on, the vegetated mountains resemble a green patchwork quilt from the many clear cuts, rivers like the Ashlu and the Rutherford are transformed into hydro electric plants. All of these issues are heavily documented and were presented the world by Brian Smith of the Range Life. Another economic resource that is impacting the BC wilderness is the construction for 2010 Winter Olympics. A local informed us that the Nordic Ski Jump grounds are slated for construction in the head waters of Callaghans Creek. This area is home to a large Grizzly population and despite the towns disapproval construction was to continue. It was trip of highs and lows. The high of experiencing BC whitewater and its adventure; followed by the low of witnessing the its destruction for man consumption. Check out this link for BC Rivers at Risk- Vids that address these issues- 49 Mega Watts by Brian Smith Skookumchuck Surf Report by Spence and Chris

What up all!
Just wanted to share a video of the Pan-American Championships that I produced recently. This competition was held this April at the US National Whitewater Center in Charlotte, NC. It served as one of the US Olympic Qualifiers, as well as the Canadian Team Trials, and the trials for Latin American countries. It was a very cool event to watch, and I’m excited to incorporate slalom into my own training as a paddler.
Hope you enjoy, and congrats to all the qualifiers!

Peace.
